Let’s talk about Miley (again)

Miley Cyrus is back, making international headlines again. The girl can’t seem to stay incognito, but it’s time to fess up –  we all have a bit of fun watching what she’s been getting up to.

This time, she’s declared herself “one of the biggest feminists in the world”. The full quote is:

“I feel like I’m one of the biggest feminists in the world because I tell women to not be scared of anything… I’m for anybody and anything, I don’t care what you want to do, what you want to look like… I’m a feminist in the way that I’m really empowering to women. I’m loud and funny and not typically beautiful.”

And you know what? She could be on to something. Feminism is about liberating women and letting them have the choice to do whatever they want, whether they’re stay at home mums or pop stars who twerk at every possible moment. It’s about empowering women and giving them the freedom of equality – something not previously enjoyed throughout history. We’re still a long way away, especially considering that feminism carries such a negative connotation that most people are too ashamed to call themselves that.

Miley’s gotten a lot of flack for the above statements, mostly by other women. It makes no sense to me because the women who give her shit because she takes her clothes off are going against the very core of feminism: which is equality. Feminism means that a women won’t be judged by her choices, as unorthodox as they may be; she’ll be equal to her male peers (who can easily make raunchy music vids without being called out for it, most of the time). Lily Allen’s new music video also provided us with same empowering message (and a really catchy tune), so Miley’s not the only one who’s not afraid to call herself a feminist.

I don’t necessarily approve of Miley’s outfits or actions but this time, I’m all for her. She’s the one who’s not judging people, she’s the one telling girls not to be scared of anything, she’s actually empowering her audience. I have no right to be judging her because she’s obviously have heaps of fun and doing things her own way and enjoying life. She’s standing up to those who denigrate her.

I think it’s time we laid off Miley, because she’s actually pretty cool – under the teddy-bear leotards and hair buns. She’s doing what she wants and she’s laughing at all her haters whilst she’s (most likely) lounging in her swimming pool full of cash drinking an “I’m Winning, Suckas” margarita. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.
