Overnight, former Lostprophets vocalist, Ian Watkins, was sentenced to 35 years in prison, following his admission to over 13 counts of sexual assault on children. The sentencing comes a year after Watkins was arrested for allegedly conspiring to rape a young child, and sexually assaulted many young girls.
Watkins has stuck to his guns about not remembering anything of the assaults in question. Continuing to claim that his addiction to drugs caused substantial memory loss, Watkins’ main defense was that he was ‘set up’ by fans who bombarded him with sexual attention while he was out of control on drugs.
The court heard that Watkins made two phone calls from where he was being held custody in Brigend’s Parc Prison. In these calls, Watkins stated that he ‘pleaded guilty to avoid a trial’ and that, when sentenced, he was going to release a statement saying: ‘It was megalolz, I don’t know what everyone is getting so freaked out about.’
The two female co-defendants were sentenced to 15 and 17 years in prison, respectively.
Watkins has been sentenced to 29 years in prison, with an extra six years on extended license. He will be able to apply for release after serving two-thirds of his sentence. The disgraced singer has also had his lyrics ripped up from the ground of his hometown, Pontypridd, where they were were an installation honoring his success.
The judge made note to tell the three defendants that this investigation ‘broke new ground’ and what the trio did ‘plumbs to new depths of depravity’.
When asked if he would still release a statement, Watkins replied: “No, it’s just lols now.”
