Fans rejoice! The little show that could has done it again. The low-rated yet critically acclaimed Community has this morning been announced to be returning for a 6th season via online streaming service Yahoo Screen. All of the current regular cast are set to return for the 13-episode season, minus fan-favorite Donald Glover, who departed mid-season 5.
Leading man Joel McHale had this to say:
“The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.’ —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”
Show producer Sony has been shopping around for a new home for the series ever since US network NBC announced it’s cancellation in May. In a world that recently saw the Big Bang Theory renewed for three consecutive seasons, it’s a win for the higher-end dimension of the broadcast spectrum – and another piece of definitive proof regarding just how much the paradigms of broadcast television have changed thanks to the overwhelming influence of the digital era.
No news yet on the unconfirmed reports that a 10th season of How I Met Your Mother is in the pipeline too.*
*We’re kidding. That would be dreadful.
