In stellar news for alliteration, but potentially horrifying news for the female population of New York City, convicted NYPD officer Gilberto Valle this week had his conviction for plotting to kidnap, kill, cook and eat his (now ex) wife overturned by a New York Judge.
Valle was originally arrested in 2012 and convicted after a jury found he was more than merely fantasising in online posts that described his desire to cook and eat his then-wife in explicit detail.
In delivering the ruling that overturned the conviction judge Paul Gardephe said:
Once the lies and the fantastical elements are stripped away, what is left are deeply disturbing misogynistic chats and emails written by an individual obsessed with imagining women he knows suffering horrific sex-related pain, terror and degradation.
Which most people might recognise as pretty much the opposite of the type of person anyone would want walking free on the streets.
Gilberto Valle reportedly proceeded to brag about his cooking skills following the pronouncement of the overturning of his conviction.
Thankfully, the NYPD has currently not given Valle his job back.
Valle will face a new trial that will rule whether or not his conviction is to be reinstated.
At least until it’s overturned, again.
