5 Minutes With: Hamish Anderson

Singer/songwriter Hamish Anderson is a young Aussie dude from Melbourne doing big and wonderful things over in the U.S. If you haven’t heard his tunes yet, we strongly encourage you to do so. Now.

Having released his new single ‘Burn’ (Oct 3rd), Hamish is gearing up to release his new EP Restless in November, followed by an Australian tour. The EP is a collection of raw and heartfelt songs inspired by friendship, relationships and the occasional losses of both.

We had a chat with this rising star about Restless, the highlights of his U.S tour and who he’d love to have a musical jam with.

Hamish Anderson interview

Tell us a bit about your musical journey so far – when did you realise you wanted to pursue music? Was there a pivotal moment?

The moment that got it all started for me was when I was 12 years old and I heard The Beatles White Album and the song “Back in the U.S.S.R”, that was the first time the sound of the guitar really stuck out to me. After hearing that song I begged my parents for a guitar and from there I feel like I’ve been on the same journey ever since.

You’re currently doing some amazing things in the U.S. What have been your highlights so far?

There have been a lot of highlights this year, but definitely getting to open for one of my heroes, B.B. King is the one that stands out the most. B.B. King has always been such an inspiration to me and my music that getting to open up for him and watch him play night after night is pretty crazy.

You can invite three people over for a musical jam – who would they be?

Hmmm good question…If we are talking musicians dead and alive I’d have to say Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles and Paul McCartney.

You’re releasing a new EP soon – what can fans expect from ‘Restless?’

With this record I really wanted to try and capture the live sound and all the songs are basically recorded live in 2-3 takes. It was more important to me to capture an overall feeling then trying to make every little part perfect and doing a lot of overdubs.

Finally, what’s planned for the rest of 2014 for Hamish Anderson?

After the B.B. King dates I head to Stubbs in Austin, Texas for a show and then back across to New York for the CMJ Festival. The EP is being released on October 21st so after that I’m heading back to Oz for shows in Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth to celebrate the EP release!
