5 Minutes With: Morgan Bain

Entering your twenties can be a crazy time. You’ve left teenagehood and you’re entering a whole new realm of emotions and life experiences.

Luckily the creatives of our generation are right there to capture these feelings; packaging our anxieties into cinematic like songs, that we can all relate to.

20-year-old Perth artist, Morgan Bain, is doing exactly this through his soulful songwriting and various musical talents.

Bain is about to embark on a national tour where he will deliver a set that is  “Jam-packed with alternative soulandis a pretty upbeat show, but does have light and shade.”

Starting and ending at Australian Blues and Roots festivals on opposite sides of the country, Morgan is paving his way for a strong future in blues. Morgan has toured internationally and nationally, as a solo artist and in various bands, and has had a lot of time to rehearse his sound and performance – and judging by his growing fan base, it’s been very well received.

Despite the soulful and deep nature of his songs, he’s not afraid to admit he learnt it all from his Nan (who is a bit of rockstar herself).

We spent some time with Morgan just before he kicks off his national tour!

Morgan Bain interview

We’ve noticed your YouTube videos start from a young age, how long have you been playing music?

Morgan: I started playing guitar at around 8, and I love singing so much I started when I was about 3! I was influenced by my parent’s ridiculous CD collection of 60s, 70s Rock N Roll and cheesy pop! Also, my Nan is an Opera singer and pianist. Everything I have learnt about singing has come from her.

[Morgan starts singing down the phone to give an example of how she changed the way he sings.]

Without her, I wouldn’t sing correctly at all.

Listening to your past music videos like  “Unkind” and “In the Middle“, it sounds like you’ve taken a new direction with your new single “Why don’t you stay?” – Will this soulful direction stick?

Definitely, I’m really liking this new direction. I’d describe it as alternative, moody, a bit ‘trip-hip’ – and soul! I’m really enjoying writing this type of music, as my last EP was focused on soul, and now it’s like I’m digging deeper musically and finding and creating something that is really me.

“The song is about anxieties that come with giving your everything to someone and how to not let those anxious thoughts take over and get in the way of how you really feel.”

I really love films, and I like to think that if you close your eyes and listen to my music, you can imagine these cinematic, vivid images – so yeah, I’m just trying to write music to make you feel.

So you kicked off the tour by opening the stage West Coast Blues’N’Roots Festival, how does it feel to be sharing these new more intimate songs with audiences?

Amazing! I’ve received really great responses so far to the new songs, and at West Coast it felt good to share the stage with those kind of acts. In opening the stage, you sort of set the standard for the festival and I just thought “Okay I really need to do this well,”, and yeah, we had fun.

What venues and shows are you most looking forward to as you start the tour?

Sydney Blues & Roots Festival! It’s amazing that we get to start and finish at a blues festival. I’m also looking forward to Frankie’s Pizza in Sydney and getting to Tassy, as it’s one of my favourite places.
